Statesboro Youth Theater

The Averitt Center's Youth Theater Program provides professional instruction that allows children to develop skills in a safe, nurturing environment. Directed by Mical Whitaker, the program offers a year-round class for elementary and middle school students. There is also an annual summer production for high school students with past performances including Hairspray! and The Wizard of Oz.

Meet Our Director

Mical Whitaker holds a BFA in Theatre from A&T University. He spent over 20 years in the professional theatre industry in New York City where he developed his own theatre company, The East River Players, one of the NYC’s most important and influential African American Theatre voices. He and a few close friends also founded the Everyman Street Festival, now known as the Lincoln Center Out of Doors, an annual 20-day celebration of live theater now celebrating its 40th Anniversary.
